Star Wars Fansite Seminar: Thursday January 24th

Another great idea from an innovator in the Star Wars fan community is an on-line fansite seminar. A cool chance for fans of varying experience to exchange information, stories, successes and mistakes on the topic of fansite running.

From Fandom Apocalypse:

"On January 24, we will be hosting/participating in the first ever Star Wars Fansite Seminar, coming to you LIVE from the electric city of Las Vegas! Before we hit up the casinos, members from Star Wars fansites worldwide will be providing tips and advice on managing a blog or website in fandom to each other. We’ll trade ideas, discuss past problems and solutions, and even answer questions from our readers!
Okay, well, we are going to be doing all of that… just minus the trip to Vegas. Bummer, right? I’d love to pay for all of you lovely people to fly out to Sin City in two days and gamble your money away, but frankly, not doing that is something I’d love even more. Is tough moral dilemma. The Fansite Seminar will actually be hosted on Twitter. Not quite as glamorous as the Entertainment Capital of the World, but what happens in Vegas would have to stay in Vegas, and that wouldn’t be very fair to all of the readers.
So, on Thursday, get ready for a day of fansite questions and answers! Use the hashtag #SWFS in any tweets about the Seminar. I’ll be providing various bits of information that I’ve found useful during five years of fansite experience (and many more years of being involved in online fandom). Other fansite folks are encouraged to share their thoughts as well. Let us know what lessons you’ve learned! Feel free to ask questions – just remember to use the #SWFS tag!"

I will be fairly busy tomorrow, but I'm going to poke my head in on Twitter to provide what experience I can from the perspective of a one-person operated blog with no staff and no editorial oversight. Easy piece of advice: pick a website name shorter or easier to abbreviate than Lightsaber Rattling, too long for an @ handle on Twitter.

Battle Meditation Review: Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Eminence (Episode 5.14)

This week's episode is brought to you by the word "awesome."
"One vision can have many interpretations."Savage and Maul forge an alliance with Death Watch to target a common enemy: Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Seriously Sith and Mandalorians in one story arc starts off what is going to be crazy ride for The Clone Wars fans. The inclusion of Black Sun, the Pykes, Hutts, and bounty hunters made this the ultimate set up episode and one of the biggest fan service episodes of the series so far.

I think my biggest issue with this episode is the same that I had when reading the novelization of this story arc.  The transitions and the way that Maul assembles his forces in this episode happened in such a rapid succession that it feels rushed and there needed to be something to establish the passage of time to make it more believable.

The idea that Maul would take over Black Sun is pretty interesting given his EU backstory.

I always enjoy the inclusion of the Hutts, one of the most interesting alien species in the galaxy.  Their greed is only balanced by their self-preservation instincts. The mental image and imagined smell of a Hutt slayed by a lightsaber is fascinating.

The Death Watch assaults on Nal Hutta and on Jabba's Palace were very awesome and well executed. At Jabba's Palace the Gamorrean guards were very cool.

I find it fitting that we see Pre Vizsla make the proverbial deal with the devil with a Sith Lord that looks very devilish.   The "alliance" of Vizsla is doomed from the start as it is revealed in this episode that both are plotting the destruction of the other.  It makes you wonder, what exactly makes Vizsla think he can tame a Sith Lord? If Obi-Wan and Dooku whooped his butt, then what chance does he have against Maul and Savage?

The issue of broadcast editing reared it's ugly head again this week. One of the scenes I was anticipating was the Savage's Vader-esque lightsaber toss. The beginning of the lightsaber toss was teased heavily in the Season 5 promotional trailers but what we saw in episode was cut off.  It is a particularly curious bit of editing because just last season we saw Ahsoka, a hero in the series decapitate four Death Watch commandos.

From "A Friend in Need"
According to the Episode Trivia Gallery:

"A more stunning version of Savage throwing his lightsaber down the length of the table and decapitating the Black Sun leaders exists, but it was edited for broadcast. The complete version will appear on the Blu-ray and DVD release."
It doesn't make clear whether this was a Cartoon Network edit or a Lucasfilm edit, but I would assume it is the former.  I guess we will just have to wait until the home video release to enjoy the awesomeness of animated decapitations.

Without spoiling the story things really get going faster and more intense as Maul's forces launch their invasion of Mandalore. At the end of this arc character's fates will be altered forever.

Actors Sam Witwer (Darth Maul) and Jon Favreau (Pre Vizsla) do some tremendous work carrying this episode. Witwer in particular gives a nuanced vocal performance that is rich and delicious just like my Momma's brownies.

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void Cover Art

"At the heart of any poor soul not at one with the Force, there is only void." ~Unknown Je'daii, 2,545 TYA (Tho Yor Arrival)
Some rather dramatic new cover art for Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void, was released by Del Rey today via Hollywood.com. The forthcoming novel by author Tim Lebbon will be released on May 7, 2013 in hardcover, ebook, and unabridged audio formats.

The novel is set to tie-in to Dark Horse Comics comic series, Dawn of the Jedi.

Set on the Deep Core planet of Tython, Dawn of the Jedi tells the story of the origins of the Jedi and their first experiences with the Force.

The first chapter of Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void can be read in the back of Timothy Zahn's recently released novel, Star Wars: Scoundrels.  The first chapter entitled "Dark Matters" can be previewed on Amazon.com through the search in the book function for Scoundrels or in a purchased copy of the book. It is worth a shot to see if you dig the setting of the story.

From Random House:

On the planet Tython, the ancient Je’daii order was founded. And at the feet of its wise Masters, Lanoree Brock learned the mysteries and methods of the Force—and found her calling as one of its most powerful disciples. But as strongly as the Force flowed within Lanoree and her parents, it remained absent in her brother, who grew to despise and shun the Je’daii, and whose training in its ancient ways ended in tragedy.

Now, from her solitary life as a Ranger keeping order across the galaxy, Lanoree has been summoned by the Je’daii Council on a matter of utmost urgency. The leader of a fanatical cult, obsessed with traveling beyond the reaches of known space, is bent on opening a cosmic gateway using dreaded dark matter as the key—risking a cataclysmic reaction that will consume the entire star system. But more shocking to Lanoree than even the prospect of total galactic annihilation, is the decision of her Je’daii Masters to task her with the mission of preventing it. Until a staggering revelation makes clear why she was chosen: The brilliant, dangerous madman she must track down and stop at any cost is the brother whose death she has long grieved—and whose life she must now fear.

Rebel Force Radio: A New Star Wars Podcast From The Former Hosts Of The Forcecast

Cool new name? (Check). Cool new logo? (Check). Same great content and guests? (Check).

Jason Swank and Jimmy Mac, long time hosts of The Forcecast, the official podcast of TheForce.net and Rebelscum, and also hosts of The Forcecast's Clone Wars Roundtable podcast are embarking on a new adventure.

This Friday January 19, 2013 will see the debut of Rebel Force Radio.

The Forcecast was the 20 ton rancor of Star Wars podcasting, in many ways based on their access it was the closest thing to an officially sanctioned Lucasfilm podcast as we got.  Even if you didn't always enjoy Jimmy and Jason's shtick, their access to top personalities made The Forcecast a must listen to podcast for hardcore Star Wars fans.

I am pretty excited to find out the guys are breaking off on their own and starting their own podcast and website. Change is a natural part of life and I am sure this new podcast will be fun.  The conversations continue...

The official website isn't up and running yet, but you can check out their Facebook page. Give them a "Like."

Star Wars: Live Action Series Alive at ABC?

"Go strap yourselves in. I'm going to make the jump to light speed."

The period between 1983's Return of the Jedi and 1999's The Phantom Menace was the dark times for Star Wars and we thought we saw a resurgence in Star Wars fandom since the Prequel Trilogy, well hold on to your blasters, because it looks like things are about to jump into hyperspace.

Entertainment Weekly's EW.com has some exclusive new information with official comments and rumors from unnamed sources regarding the status of the mothballed Star Wars: Live Action "Underworld" series.

From ABC entertainment President Paul Lee:
“We’d love to do something with Lucasfilm, we’re not sure what yet,” Lee exclusively told EW. “We haven’t even sat down with them. We’re going to look at [the live-action series], we’re going to look at all of them, and see what’s right. We weren’t able to discuss this with them until [the acquisition] closed and it just closed. It’s definitely going to be part of the conversation.”
From unnamed sources:
Sources say the live-action series centers on the story of rival families struggling over the control of the seedy underside of the Star Wars universe and the people who live within the subterranean level and air shafts of the metropolis planet Coruscant (the Empire’s urban-sprawl-covered home planet). A bounty hunter may be the main character. Set between the original Star Wars film trilogy and the prequels, the time period allows for all sorts of potential appearances from classic figures from the Star Wars universe.Extensive art work including character designs, costume designs, and set designs were all developed by a top team of concept artists and designers who worked for more than a year on the third floor design studio at George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch’s main house on the project. The team was closely supervised by McCallum and Lucas.
We knew about the scripts being done, but this is new news about concept art, character, costume and set design.  Pretty exciting stuff.

My biggest concern is how the show's concept and content would fit on network television. ABC would really have to push the content envelope without significantly watering down Lucas' reported vision for the Live Action series.  This has always sounded like a high end HBO/AMC type of cable show.

Review: Star Wars: Scoundrels by Timothy Zahn

Perhaps this makes me a bad fan or more likely a bad reviewer, but every time a new Star Wars book is announced and released my expectations for that novel usually far outstrip what it is reasonable to expect.  As such I generally try to read the novel twice before reviewing it.  Reading Scoundrels the first time it took me a surprising long amount of time to get through, and upon a second reading while my opinion of the novel improved, it was not a significant improvement.

As much as I admire and appreciate Timothy Zahn's contributions and hopefully future contributions to the Star Wars universe, Scoundrels is a book that is mildly enjoyable but decidedly average.

The premise is fairly simple, we have Han and Chewie recruited to steal some stolen credit tabs (identity coded payment devices) and in order to do so they must recruit a crew from amongst the galactic fringe who have skills and abilities that our dynamic duo lacks.  In accomplishing their mission they are forced to trust and rely on individuals they either do not know well or have reasons to question their loyalty. The plot is complicated by the fact that the heist involves stealing from Avrak Villachor, a Black Sun sector chief. Conveniently Villachor is hosting an elaborate festival on his lavish estate that allows for Solo to scheme and plot.  Things get even crazier when you add in the presence of Qazadi a Faleen Black Sun Vigo and Dayja and D'Ashewl a pair of Imperial Intelligence agents.

The book had some interesting treats for Lucasfilm fans as well as Expanded Universe fans. The "Han Shot First" scene as well as the Raiders of the Lost Ark scene were fun if a bit cheesy. The inclusion of some minor characters like Winter and Kell Tainer is also a nice treat for long time EU readers.

There are two strengths that generally flow through all of Timothy Zahn's Star Wars works.  He is able to weave multiple plot lines which stand up well on their own together at the climax of his stories.  Everyone ending up at the same spot in the final battle provides satisfying resolution to the story, but does require some suspension of disbelief.

The other strength that Zahn usually exhibits is creating strong, memorable and fun characters.

Scoundrels feels like a disappointment to me because in these two key areas it feels like one of Zahn's weaker novels.

On the plot, we have the main plot of the story which involves Han's planning and running the heist, we have the "B" plot involving Villachor's attempts at self-preservation and machinations within Black Sun, and the "C" plot focusing on Dayja and the Imperial's interest in taking down Black Sun.

Not all Star Wars novels fit into the traditional formula and involve lots of action, warfare, dueling, etc. In this novel while their was action in parts it was more of a suspense feel than the space opera we usually get.

I can't help but feeling that if their was a more aggressive and action packed subplot it would have helped support the main plots better.  Of course different readers have different preferences, so my opinion may not be reflective of the fan community at large.

Plot can be overcome however if there are great characters. In Scoundrels it feels like Han's characterization was slightly off, Chewie was underused and the majority of the new characters were underdeveloped and bland.

Han didn't feel right in this novel and at times comes off as borderline omniscient.  While we know Han is a wily and clever operator, it seems like he was just slightly too clever in this novel.  There was also one particular scene where post-Episode IV but pre-Episode V Han should have flirted but instead reacted negatively to Bink's teasing flirtation.

One of the fun things about a novel set in this era is the ability to play Chewie and Han off of each other and use a character that is not available in the later EU.  The problem in this book is that because of the inclusion of so many characters, Chewie is largely marginalized.

Realistically of the new characters the only ones that I felt a strong interest in were Bink, Villachor, and to a lesser extent Security Chief Lapis Sheqoa.

Qazadi, Dayja and the Solo's crew were introduced but largely underdeveloped characters. They were there, but there wasn't a lot to make me care for or hate them.  In particular both Qazadi and Dayja feel like simple plot devices to apply pressure to Villachor from different directions.  Dayja in particular got a fair bit of page time for a character that feels like a random generic Imperial Intelligence agent.

Bink is an interesting and fun character and I hope we see her in other stories down the road. Villachor who's life is hanging in the balance for the majority of the novel is a compelling character, and Sheqoa who's relationship with Bink and Villachor makes him a pivotal minor player in the story provides an interesting "good guy who is working for a villain" character.

Just like at the Sabacc table, you win some and you lose some. Unfortunately this novel doesn't feel like a winning hand.

Scoundrels is on sale now in hardcover, ebook and audiobook formats.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Missing in Action Trailer #1 (5.12)

New Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 5: Fugitive Ahsoka Arc Speculation

The Clone Wars is returning this Saturday with an all-new episode, continuing the D-squad arc but introducing a new character in Republic Commando Gregor, a clone who has lost his memory.

With the return of TCW from it's winter break we also have gotten a new trailer from EW.com.  This trailer is both a retrospective on the previous seasons of TCW and provides a brief glimpse for what looks to be this season's final arc starring Ahsoka Tano on the run on Coruscant.

Fandom points to JawaJames at ClubJade for his in-depth analysis of Entertainment Weekly's Star Wars: The Clone Wars 100th Episode series trailer.

Readers of this blog will remember back in September when I dissected the Season 5 preview trailer and speculated that Ahsoka may be on an adventure inspired by Harrison Ford's remake of The Fugitive.

The post entitled Ahsoka Fugitive Arc? Clone Wars Season 5 Speculation, also provides a lot of screen captures from the trailer. The arc looks to feature heavily the red clad Coruscant security clone troopers, Asajj Ventress in a new costume, and is probably the introduction of Clone Commander Thorn.

Before the new clips in the trailer we again see Asajj attacking Ahsoka in what looks to be the underlevels of Coruscant.  Then we see Ahsoka crouching above what appears to be the Senate Plaza as a patrol of Clones marches by.

Next we see Ahsoka in a more industrial looking area of Coruscant, this could be The Works, as LAAT gunships shine their spotlights around searching presumably for Ahsoka.

Then we see Ahsoka run up some stairs, lightsaber ignited only to be met at the top by a LAAT.

The trailer closes with Ahsoka plummeting down into the heart of Coruscant's lower levels in a shot that looks very much like the preview of Star Wars 1313.

The voice over for the clip is provided by Yoda who says, "Bring back this lost child before it is to late."

The clear implication is that he is talking about Ahsoka.  It should also be noted that in the Season 5 trailer we saw Anakin landing from what could be a similar Coruscant level jump that we see Ahsoka doing in this clip.

Putting the pieces together, it is my assumption that Yoda is sending Anakin after Ahsoka. Why is Ahsoka being chased by Clones? How does her duel with Asajj Ventress fit in? What is up with the Clone Wars protesters?

Something clearly happens that makes Ahsoka feel like she is unable to turn to the Jedi, this has to be something fairly major.

Theory #1: Ahsoka Kills Asajj (Weaker Theory)

Asajj Ventress is at this point  a bounty hunter who is hired to commit some mischief on Coruscant, either with anti-war protesters or at the Jedi Temple.  Ahsoka and Asajj duel and Asajj is defeated and killed. Ahsoka during the battle gets to close to the dark side and slays Asajj. Ahsoka is scared by her actions and flees.  The Jedi Council sends Anakin in pursuit of his padawan, Anakin confides of his mission to Palpatine who also dispatches the clones in pursuit of the padawan as well.

Theory #2: Ahsoka Is Framed (Stronger Theory)

Asajj is hired to perform a terrorist strike on some anti-war protestors on Coruscant and makes it look like Ahsoka is the perpetrator. "Reluctantly" Chancellor Palpatine orders Ahsoka's arrest. Ahsoka escapes custody and strikes out looking for answers and who really committed the crime in the under-levels of Coruscant. Ahsoka is pursued by Asajj (who is trying to kill her), Anakin (who is trying to convince her to turn herself in), and the clones (who are trying to capture her) as she attempts to evade all three.
